On March 26, in Boston, 4000 people took to the streets to oppose the commodification of life. This was the largest protest against the biotechnology industry that North America and Europe have ever seen.
On March 26, we made history. We showed the world that we will not allow corporations and state governments to turn the world into a laboratory for the development of a brave new form of capitalist control. We have made our voices heard: humanity and nature are not for sale, not for profit, and not for capital-driven experimentation.
We are riding a wave that began in Seattle and will continue to rise as we move toward the demonstration against the IMF and the World Bank on April 16 in Washington D.C. This is the beginning of a new movement that will move beyond the realm of reform, protest, and alternatives.
This is the beginning of a revolutionary movement to create a new society built out of a new logic that breaks from the system of domination and exploitation, the logic of the state and capital, the logic of sexism and racism that brought us to the current crisis in democracy. We will build our movement and a new society out of a humanistic logic based on principles of solidarity, democracy, and cooperation.
Our movement goes beyond the problem of genetically engineered food. It is a struggle for freedom from corporate control over our lives and freedom from transnational apparatuses such as the WTO, the IMF, and the World Bank. Our movement is also a visionary struggle for freedom itself; it is a demand for direct democratic control over our lives. We want more than good food for the world.
We want to create a new world.
