racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alan Goodman, a professor at Hampshire College, co-director of the American Anthropological Association&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.understandingrace.org\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Understanding Race project<\/a>, and long-time friend of the ISE, has posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2014\/05\/23\/a-troublesome-racial-smog\/\" target=\"_blank\">review on <em>Counterpunch.org<\/em><\/a> of a disturbing new book by <em>New York Times<\/em> science writer Nicholas Wade, which aims to revive long-discredited theories proposing a biological basis for racial divisions among peoples.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s an excerpt:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nicholas Wade\u2019s book, <i>A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race, and Human History<\/i>, is what the title suggests: a troubling view of human history. \u00a0\u00a0<i>A Troublesome Inheritance<\/i> is troublesome, but not for the reason he proposes: his &#8220;courageous&#8221; telling of hard truths about genetic differences among races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Rather, Wade\u2019s lack of understanding of history, the social sciences, population genetics, and the scientific process is troublesome.\u00a0 \u00a0Not getting the basics right leads to his linking of all manner of lived inequalities to genetic differences among races. \u00a0\u00a0His logical errors set the clock back more than a century on public understandings of human genetic variation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;
